Selecting your French bed can be a little confusing due to the variety of bed styles and sizes available. Each bed frame may also be fitted with different sizes and styles of bed base and mattress thus giving you a truly unique bed.

We’ve provided some information below that may help you to choose the type of bed base and mattress to fit your requirements, however due to the individual nature of each of our beds we are more than happy to discuss the mattress and bed base options with you.

FRENCH BED STYLES

There are different styles of French beds available and this may determine the type of bed base and mattress that are most suitable to complete your fully refurbished bed. The most standard styles of French bed fall into two categories: Straight End and Corbeille (Curved) End and these are described below along with additional information on choosing the most appropriate bed base and mattress.

Straight End

A standard French double bed is generally about 4ft 8″ wide within the side rails and will accommodate a standard British double mattress (4ft 6″ wide x 6ft 3″ long). This does leave a narrow gap either side of the mattress which is not visible once the bed is dressed.

Many standard French double beds can accommodate a standard British king size mattress (5ft wide x 6ft 3″ long).

If the king size mattress is 6ft 6″ long then the French bed’s side rails may be modified at an additional cost of £230.

Corbeille (Curved) End

Standard French double beds with a corbeille (curved) end will generally take a standard British double mattress (4ft 6″ wide x 6ft 3″ long). This does leave a narrow gap either side of the mattress which is not visible once the bed is dressed.

To take advantage of the full width of the corbeille end bed we recommend the purchase of a “curved end mattress”. Our curved end mattresses are custom made to fit each individual bed.

To accommodate a longer mattress (6ft 6″ long) the French bed’s side rails may be modified at an additional cost of £230.

BED BASES

Slatted Base

Our French double beds are supplied complete with a metal and beech slatted base.

Sommier Base

Sommier (similar to a divan base) can be supplied to fit French double beds at an extra cost of £150.

Our king size and larger beds are supplied with a sommier base that is custom made to fit each individual bed.

MATTRESSES

Mattress Sizes

Purchasing a New Mattress

At ‘French Beds’ we are able to supply you with any type of mattress that you require to fit your chosen bed. This includes curved end mattresses specifically designed to fit your chosen corbeille bed and higher specification mattresses.

Montrose Pocket Spring Mattress

The Montrose pocket sprung mattress is manufactured to the highest standards, governed by the strict audited guidelines of the National Bed Federation. This ensures that manufacturing practices and quality of components is of paramount importance and allows the product to carry the coveted NBF Approved Supplier’s logo.

The specification of this particular model consists of over 1000 individual pocket springs with a perimeter wire edge frame. This spring unit gives excellent support whilst the comfort layers of wool, cotton and resilient white fibre offers breathable comfort. The filling layers to both sides of the Montrose mattress making it a very durable, supportive and comfortable choice.
